Wildlife artwork

After spending a decade painting and drawing pet portraits, I’m so pleased to be offering wildlife artwork as well. We have many incredible species on this planet, and capturing their beauty and vitality is something I find truly rewarding.

I love working in series — creating pieces that complement each other while standing strong on their own. I currently have two series underway:

Charcoal native Aotearoa New Zealand bird series, Beneath The Feathers.
The ruru and kererū are complete, with the kākā currently in progress.

Oil painting big cat series, Where Power Rests.
Who doesn’t love big cats! The panther is complete, I have a beautiful Sumatran tiger and Amur leopard references ready to begin — it’s shaping up to be a stunning collection.

There’s plenty more in the pipeline too, including a Kaimanawa horse duo, watch this space!.

Beneath the Feathers

My native Aotearoa New Zealand charcoal bird series, Beneath the feathers.

A charcoal study of three native New Zealand birds and the contrasting qualities that define them. I chose these images carefully — for what they reveal to me. The ruru is both soft and intense, the kererū both untidy and beautiful, and the kākā both mischievous and thoughtful (he kākā is currently in progress). Together, these works explore how seemingly opposing traits can coexist, creating the unique character and presence of each bird. Each reference had a natural honesty that drew me in and felt true to them.

Working in charcoal allows me to focus on tone and subtle detail, capturing both the presence and character of each bird.

Each charcoal bird drawing is hand drawn from stunning reference photography by the talented Upper Hutt photographer Tony Stoddard at Wildbirds.nz

The Gentle Hunter - ruru/morepork

Original charcoal drawing on 300 gsm Fabriano Artistico fine art paper

New Zealand native ruru/morepork owl.

This particular ruru is a fluffy ball of cuteness that carries that intense gaze of a predator, something owls do so effortlessly. Capturing that balance of gentle and power is what makes this little owl so special.

The Dishevelled Darling

Original charcoal drawing on 300gsm Fabriano Artistico fine art paper

New Zealand native kererū/wood pigeon.

This kererū captures their personality so well — a little clumsy, messy and somewhat chonky, but with such pretty faces. Whooshing through the canopy, they really do have their own loveable quirks.

Where Power Rests

Where Power Rests explores the quiet strength of these animals — moments where intensity softens and power is held rather than shown.

Working in oils allows me to build rich depth and warmth, with subtle tones emerging through the layers to bring light and life to each piece. It’s in these quieter moments that their true presence comes through — calm, grounded, and powerful.

Midnight Sentinel

Original oil painting on stretched canvas*

Black panther (melanistic form of a leopard or jaguar)

This panther immediately drew me in. While their colouring and intensity can feel quite dark or even sinister, this one carries a proud, almost heroic presence — a beautiful balance of power, grace, and strength.

This artwork is hand painted from a beautiful reference photo by the talented international photographer
Pascal Manarus.
